Today, my friends and I went to court. We are all college students, and for next semester, we will be on probation and have to do 8 hours of community service, as well as a $25 fine each. All for swinging on swings in the park after dark. FML

inner5yearold tells us more.

all the people saying that we were doing drugs or other illegal activities, we werent. we were just college students who had a lot of stress, and wanted to relax by acting like five year olds in the park, swinging on swings, playing on the see-saw, going down slides, monkey bars etcetera. we did not know the park closed after dark, there were no signs by the entrances, and there were no gates. anyone can walk in there at any time of day, and they would not know. the weathered sign, we found it the next day, and it was at the back of the park, no where near any lights or anything. we were just chilling there because we didnt want to go back to our rooms because of annoying roommates. there was even an overhead light shining into the park, giving the impression that it was open after dark. the police didnt even ask if we were doing anything illegal, or asked to see what was in our pockets or anything. two of us didnt even have any ID because we didnt want to lose it on the swings. new ro police are entirely retarded. period.

YDI for trespassing. Next time read teh signs. Plus it was very dangerous and stupid since shady deals can go down in the parks after dark.

where i live, no one is allowed in the parks either because idiots like to sell drugs there and hold gang meetings. But i do remember sometime my friends and i would play "groundies" on the jungle gym after 11pm and we were like 16. life was good then

YDI for being in a park after it closed. It's not like there are huge signs at park entrances that say "Park Closes After Dusk/Dark". ...Oh, wait. There are.

I wonder if the signs have lights on them, or did the politicians think the average American has night vision goggles?

I live in Australia and this is pretty interesting. what kind of parks are we talking about? like any park even if it's small and only has like a swing and a slide or big parks of a certain size? the law is the law mate. follow it. YDI

OK first off, as in a lot of these, we're lacking info. Yes, in NYC, all public parks close at dusk, and all have large signs posted stating this (Yes I live in NYC I know). Secondly, depending on the particular park/location/siutation it could well have been a situation of a cop being an ass, or the OP being one, we can't tell. If for example, the OP and friends where in the park, the cop swings by, says 'Sorry folks I gotta ask you to leave' and they don't move on, or give him any crap or agree, and indeed are there again when he comes back later on or the next day, he MUST act... Of course, The cop could have also just not gotten any in a few days, it's tough to say :). This being said, anyone going to court can at least get a public defender and unless there's some history there (or at the locale) they can probibly get out w/o a problem....

Posting signs that are only useful during nighttime when nobody can see them might be a bad idea, no?

TwoZeroOZ: I'm going to assume you have never been anywhere near New York City in your entire life. There are lights EVERYWHERE. Every single street remains illuminated from dusk till dawn. And YES, the signs (like this one http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3417/3182097005_81d0666e74_b.jpg) that tell you not to be in the park are near the street lamps. If the OP was anywhere else in the state of NY, then I can't speak to their situation. But in New York Ciy, the only way you will be able to miss the giant signs that tell you not to be there is if you are blind.

The probation sucks, and so does the $25, but the 8 hours of community service might not. It depends on what you have to do. It adds up quick though. That's like, one day, if you go all day, or two days if you dont. Thats nothing.

it only takes one asshole to ruin it for everyone. same goes in schools and everywhere else: once one person falls, we all fall. I hate that logic, but hey we are use to it by now.

I think a simple "please leave this park" would have been fine.

Something tells me they mouthed off at the cop. Stuff like this cops usually will just tell you to leave unless you are rude to them and mouth off
