Today, my hours got cut because I couldn't make it into work when they called me in. Why couldn't I make it in? I was in an interview for a better job. I didn't get the job. FML

Wow, people really don't understand how that works... Okay, if you've never had that happen to you, you shouldn't comment on it, really people don't show your stupidity... Let's say you work for Krogers (which until I got a better job, I recently did) Krogers will work you the minimum 8 hrs a week, and they'll call you in any other day that they may need you. Now, it's not fair because if they need you they should schedule you anyway, but since you're in a union (which Krogers is) you get only the minimum allowed hours weekly at just a few cents above minimum wage. If you don't come in when they call you in, they won't schedule you for any extra hours beyond what they HAVE to give you. If you come in all the hours that they didn't schedule you but called you in, they'll continue to give you full time hours on a part time allowance. It's a scam a lot of grocery stores and other retailers do to keep themselves with a cashier and you with as little as they can give you and every other employee... Like I said, if you don't know any better, you probably shouldn't comment on things like this... FYL OP

Sucks for you. Should have taken a sick day.

man i didnt think they can do that they did that to my dAd its illegal

#38, unless there is a contract or state law that requires a minimum amount of hours it isn't illegal. Most times employers have the right to schedule you as little as they want or need, especially in Texas (where the OP is from). Always read whatever they have you sign and make sure you read the employee handbook.

Unless your job requires you to be on call or you requested to be on call, they shouldn't have been able to fire you for just that. That seems a bit suspicious to me, I think there's more to this FML than OP says.

That's not how it is for all jobs. At my old job try would tell you that you are on call for that day. That meant that if you were called in you would have to be there ready to work within say 30 minutes. If you didn't make it in time you got in trouble. Maybe that's what happened with op, and in that case it would be her fault.

If you were TOLD you were on call, sure. That doesn't happen in most cases. If you're in a small time job like cashiering, you're scheduled time, and MAYBE they would call you, maybe they wouldn't. You're not told either way. But you're still expected to be there when they call...

Yeah if op wasn't told to be ready then yeah, it's not her fault.

It's only loyalty to your company when you spend your time waiting by the phone to get as many hours as possible, and when you're finally working the needed hours they cut you off because someone else (who generally sucks the managers' c**k) needs them. It's not about loyalty, it's about favoritism

That's your fault for not requesting the day off to interview with another job. The hour cuts are well deserved.

Agree with 46. If you are serious about interviews, roster the day off! That's what I have done everytime I have had an interview!

I would agree with the both of you if it weren't for the fact that a lot of times interviews are scheduled either the day of, or less than 24 hrs after they call. A lot of places won't work with you if it's that close, and if you're not scheduled or not on call, you should be eligible to take that day off how you please, and not be penalized for not being there for the company when they randomly call you in.

If the OP is on call, he should have asked for a better interview time. Future employers understand that there are occasionally conflicts when you're already employed and most are fine with scheduling around them. If the OP wasn't on call, and was simply asked to come in because someone else had called out, he still should have warned his current employer before hand that he would not be available that day. Better opportunity or not, you should never jeopardize the job you already have for a possibility. It's irresponsible, either way.

Mabster84 2

That's all fine and good... unless you don't have the unimaginable psychic power of knowing who's going to call you and who won't... If you have the day off anyway, and you're not on call, it's your day to do as you please. If you decide to go to an interview and, while there, get called into your other job, can't answer the phone (obviously) and end up getting your hours cut down because they're upset with you for not being available on a day when they scheduled you to not be available anyway, it's a FYL moment... really it's not that hard...

sallen0046 4

That's all well and good, but it doesn't change the fact that if you've got something important to do, and a job where you're likely to get called in, you should still tell your manager that you absolutely will not be available to come on on that day. It takes all of a minute to do, and would have entirely avoided this.

Mabster84 2

Not necessarily, that would be nice if we were living in a land of sunshine and rainbows however as I've stated before, when scheduling interviews, unless the job is in a big career the new employers usually schedule an interview less than 24 hrs in advance. If you already have the day off, there's nothing in the legal system that says you have to go to work when called in, I mean you can check and all, but I'm telling you it's not in there. So it's usually the current employer who takes out you not being available exactly when they need you, when you're already scheduled off. So then the current employer decides to cut your hours in reprisal of you not being the lap dog they intend for you to be. Still not that hard to figure out.
