Today, my husband and I found out that our dog was pregnant. He now refuses to have kids with me for at least two years, because he wants to raise the puppies without any "distractions". FML

You don't want puppies around babies anyways. They make the human race look bad. While the little puppies are zipping around cute as hell, the baby doesn't have the neck strength to hold up its giant bulbous head. Most babies eventually surpass the dogs in intelligence, but early on, it's a blowout for the dogs.

I think it's kind of nice that he's so into the puppies lol. You try your hardest to change his mind though. Atleast you know that he'd be like this with your future children. Great dad in the making!

Exactly! Take this as a 'practice round'...kinda.

Why don't you just give the puppies away then? Surely you wouldn't have planned on keeping the whole litter anyway.

... I am telling people that's what it is from now on..,

I have a feeling the puppies are going to come out like the ones in Family Guy when Brian thinks he is going to be a dad.....with puppy bodies and a human.

he DOES know that they stop being 'puppies' after like 6 months right?

No they don't. They stop being puppies at a year old. A lot of bigger breed dogs take up to 2 years before they're fully grown.

In addition to 23, some dogs never grow out of being a puppy. But yes, it's at least a year before they aren't suppose to be considered puppies any more. The reason people think six months is because that's when they can breed. Just like teenagers can get pregnant even though they aren't adults yet.

Also the spitz breeds are still puppies till 2 years but seriously, dogs are puppies forever.

Your username is very fitting for that comment...

I don't blame him. Puppies are easier to deal with than babies

I think he's heard that babies can clone themselves and is terrified.

Looks like he has his priorities straight...

You should think of the puppies as a training course to see if kids are a good idea

My immediate thought: why wasn't your dog spayed? Your wording seems to imply that the pregnancy was a surprise, so I can't help but feel YDI.

Perhaps they were going to breed her later, but she got out and got pregnant? Shouldn't jump to YDI, not everyone wants to spay their pets.

33: they should anyway! There are too many unhomed animals dying in shelters because people keep breeding and breeding and breeding their animals just to make money and then the offspring are abandoned because " they're not cute little ones anymore".

I agree with 33. Some people prefer to not want to spay/neuter their pet because one day they want to breed their animal. All of my animals except one are fixed, because I want to breed her ONCE some day. She's a pure indoor cat, and had escaped once when we were in the middle of having our kitchen fixed. And was showing symptoms of being pregnant. Luckily it turned out to be a false one. But still, I can understand how some people don't want to fix their animals. They just have to be extra careful.

33 - if they don't want to spay their pets then yes it is a YDI as its no surprise that she got pregnant... Male dogs can smell a bitch in heat from over a mile off and have even been known to jump/break through fences to get at a female who's ready to breed... They've even been known to tie and have a successful breeding through chain link fence/kennels... The only surprise would be if they thought the dog was spayed when it wasn't...

38: It really depends on what they do. My mom's puppy isn't fixed and during the times she is in heat she isn't allowed outside for long and is always supervised. They start doing it about the time she is suppose to go into heat until they are 100% sure she is out. If the people were careful and the dog just escaped then it was an accident. But if they were being stupid and just not paying attention then yes they deserve it.

Also, maybe they were excited about the puppies but the wife is just not happy about her husbands reaction, in which case it's not a YDI. There's not enough information given for you to jump to the conclusion that they didn't want puppies at all.

Oh gosh, here we go again with the conversation about spaying and neutering and already there's the "Well, what if they don't want to?" Short version: There's a list of medical and behavior reasons for why it's the best option. Also, we don't need pet owners thinking they can be breeders just 'cause they want to or because they think their dog is some fantastic candidate for creating more litters. No, it is not a "right" to breed.

NO EXCUSE for wanting to breed dogs or cats. Not when millions are being killed every year because they can't find homes. And for those that say 'she doesn't get let out or whatever.....BS!!! In addition to preventing unwanted animals, it's also healthier for the dog or cat to get fixed. If you can't afford it, you have no business having a dog or cat. Try working a few days at a shelter and enlighten yourself.

Well clearly one of them wants puppies since the husband wants to raise them. It really is irresponsible though to not neuter ones pet, sure you can make a couple bucks selling the puppies or kittens but you are just adding to the over population.

Honestly, some people don't want shelter dogs, especially if they have kids. I've personally had more than one bad experience with shelter dogs around my children, and therefore won't get them anymore unless they are still puppies (I just adopted a puppy and he's doing fine so far).

If you can't afford to spay/neuter, you can't afford a pet.
