TooLesbian tells us more.
I am the OP for this post. She is not my friend, just the sister of a friend (I live with both). Where I live in Australia, "queer" is still used as a derogatory word against gay people, and gay men and women are often called that by homophobes in public. She is completely straight, but thinks she is revolutionary by joining the gay rights movement as an "ally". Because she knows gay people, she assumes that she is entitled to use words we call ourselves. She knows I'm not comfortable with the word "queer" because I've had it used against me by bullies at high school, but she continues to use it because "it's an umbrella term" (although it isn't, some a word SOME LGBT people call themselves). She isn't a homophobe, and I'm not insinuating that she is - just really annoying.

she's right that the word was originated to be derogatory towards people that are mentally challenged.
I'm a disabled and queer activist. I know there are other LGBTQ people who do not identify with the term queer, but there are also many of us who do. I've written widely on ableism in language. Insane and stupid are both ableist terms with a lot of baggage in violence against disabled people.
To clarify, I don't believe in arbitrarily policing others' language, especially because there are a lot of reasons why it's hard to stop using words like insane or stupid. But it is important to recognize the history of these terms--a history of isolation, abuse, sexual violence, and even murder .
ooh, you have the opportunity to observe a wild SJW in it's native environment.
"Queer" never used to mean gay back in the day in Britain
She kinda is correct because queer also means weird.
the same could be said about using the word "gay" because it means happy, but she knows it bothers her roommate because she isn't using it to mean weird.
