Today, my mother found my escaped pet snake after she had already washed and dried it with the laundry. FML

Quick question and I'm probably goig to ger down voted but how hard is it to take care of a snake? I'm thinking of getting one.

It most likely escape and it just hid in op clothes :/

You should definitely do your research. Just like any animal, different snakes prefer different things. Be sure to look up proper cages, food and bedding, etc. They seem like simple pets to keep but every animal comes with responsibility. Good luck, #33, on whatever decision you make :)

47, thanks for the advice :) I've been doing research but I've been struggling on deciding on a breed and I'd also like a bit of personal advice from someone who owns/has previously owned one

Well, #61, I owned a ball python and I'd say they make wonderful pets. The main thing is they need an enclosure with a suitable living temperature and you should not live-feed them.

As a snake mommy, I LOVE my babies. For a 1st time rep owner, go with either a corn snake or ball python. Both are AMAZING escape artist! If you go with a corn, then a glass terrarium with screen top (partial covered) are okay. If you go with a ball, then I prefer vision cages (wood on all sides except front which is locking glass - either slide or hinge). If you go with a steralite container (while small - read small! - holes drilled in top and sides), then make sure you get one with a locking lid. As I've mentioned, both are escape artist! Lock, lock, and lock some more ;) As a previous poster mentioned, please feed F/T and not live. My bigger boy is a rescue... His 1st owners fed live, he didn't take it, so they left the rat in there... After MONTHS of rehab, he now has scars all down his back. It's not cool to slowly be eaten by your food. At least when a snake kills, it's a quick death. In regards to substrate, I personally prefer paper towels. Super easy clean up!

Depends which type you're planning on getting, it's all a personal preference.

I disagree with pp. i had a ball python and he loved live mice. I tried frozen and he just left it there. They like the fight. Also no hole is too small for them to fit through. I thought i had my top on tight enough with a weight on it and sneaky bastard got out. After that he was pissed at me.

We have a breeding project with our ball pythons and we were able to switch all of them over to f/t. You must not be heating the prey up enough. They tag based on their heat sensor readings.

We started off with a black corn snake. She was awesome. Stayed wrapped around my hand for 4 hours as we explored a cool cemetery, and then gave us laughs as we went through a McD's drive thru. Pretty easy to care for, as long as you do your research, as one should for any pet. Have fun, and be responsible! ...and yes, they are very strong escape artists. If you can't lock your terrarium, weight the lid - at all corners - with something serious. You'll need more weight than you think. Also, do stick with frozen feeders. The risk of injury from live is just too great.

Sorry for your loss op. That is tragic.

it probably puked while it was going around in circles

Why do people keep snake as pets? They are not cuddly or fuzzy or lovable. I always believed it takes a particular type of psychopath to keep a pet snake.

As a snake owner, I take offense at that! Until you've owned a snake yourself, you won't know just how cuddly and lovable they can be. I'll give you the "fuzzy" bit but I prefer smooth scales over fuzz anyway.

If it takes a psychopath to realize that all animals are different and can still make good pets despite the bad rep they get, then I'm a proud psychopath.

Raise hand if you're a proud "psychopath". *Raising hand*

as a psychopath, I find this offensive. just because I'm mentally unsound doesn't mean I keep reptiles as pets! i kill things for fun, why would I try to purposely keep a snake alive? ~deep rooted sarcasm~

Some people say only a patheticly lonely single person has cats. I'm married and have a child on the way and we are planning for another in a few years. I have a cat and a dog. And I want another cat. I also want another dog, a ferret, a macaw, a green anole, some aquatic frogs, seahorses, and would be perfectly fine with having a snake in the house. And that's just the small animals. I'd love to have enough room for horses and cows and sheep and goats and maybe even an alpaca! What does that say about me?? Nothing besides the fact I love animals. Don't stereotype. It's rude.

Some people are allergic to cats, dogs, and rodents. The dander and saliva can trigger some very severe reactions in some people. Your comment is insensitive to people who love animals in general, such as myself, or people who have severe allergies and can't keep any other pet that's not a scaley one. Does that make them "psychopaths "?

Snakes are quite cuddly. I love the feel of their skin. Maybe you are a psychopath to think that? Sheesh. You dont sound very bright.

Why do people who have stupid opinions keep talking? I'm sure you're not cuddly or cute at all either, but you may have friends or a significant other. My snakes seem to have more common sense than you.

I got this kind of comment from EVERYONE when my pet rats were still around. "Why would you own a rodent that lives in the SEWER?" "OMG they're so filthy!" etc. Rats aren't dirty, they're a totally different breed/strain than their wild cousins, and they're so sweet and cuddly. It's a shame when people stereotype against different types of pets. Maybe it's because I love all animals, but it bothers me more than it probably should. There are very few animals I'd never own, but at least I can respect the people who do love them, and not call them psychopaths. The ignorance is astounding. :(

That serpently was an unfortunate end to this tale
