Ha ha! It's like that scene in "Step Brothers." "You showed up in tuxedos for a an interview for a job that requires you to clean toilettes."
I've heard you always dress one step above what the job's uniform is. Oh, and don't forget to bring your own pen to fill out the application. Looks good being prepared. (:
So in a hippy style store, I should come in naked, caked in mud, with 6 feet long dreadlocks while high on Acid and tripping balls.
That all depends, what's their uniform? (:
Make sure Mr. Happy wears his bow tie.
What's one step above a spacesuit?
Master Chief's Armor
Sometimes its not always clear, it seems the age of the suit is on the out depending in the company and industry. I had an interview at Microsoft and they said to not wear a suit unless you wanted "interviewee" looks all day. In my industry at least, which is software development, I'm told to never wear a suit, but business casual. It depends on the dress code of the company usually.
It was your interview, she can insist all she wants to, you're old enough to dress yourself. Did she know where your interview was? At any other place she would just be advising you on making a good impression, I assume she's old enough to know from experience that hippies hate suits.
yeah well, that's just like, your opinion Mom
You could have gone in there with Iron Butterfly playing your theme music, with a green tambourine in each hand, if you show up looking like a suit, you're still a suit.
Who still listens to there moms
You for sure didn't listen to your mom when she corrected your grammar.
For the most part she was right. My school told us to wear a suit to any professional interview because it's always better to be overdressed than underdressed. Then again, my school expected us to be working at more professional places than a hippie store, so I guess that case is different.
You said yourself that they teach you to wear a sit on a Professional interview. This was a hippie retail store. I'm sure your school would not teach you to wear one to that.
I don't think you didn't get the job because of your outfit. I've never rejected an applicant for overdressing. Only for underdressing.

That is so not your fault. You did the proper thing, and what any other interviewer would want. Next time you will get the job.
Dress appropriately, you cant be draped in a sari for an interview at the hooters.
