Today, my mother threw away my brand new headphones. She saw them on the couch with duct tape on the wires and assumed they were "old, broken, and cheap." I put the tape there to avoid damaging the wires. FML

Why do people assume it's okay to just throw things out without asking? I hope she buys you new ones, OP.

Did you respond to her with "YOU'RE old, broken, and cheap!"?

Good thinking with the tape, sucks that they got thrown away though... I'm sure if you explain she'll replace them for you.

Do you really need to protect the wires like that? How clumsy are you? I've got a pile of headphones that have gone mono, lost the padding or stopped working altogether, but I've never broken or cut one of the wires.

I've never damaged a wire but the plastic casing on one of my pairs split and exposed a wire.

I've run over my headphones wires several times with my office chair and they're still fine. I guess it on build quality. Funny thing is, these are cheap headphones. The wire is the part that gets the most abuse, yet lasts the longest. I think if the wire is thin enough to not withstand heavy use, then it will also be too thin to reasonably use duct tape on.

Not my headphones but I have a few phone chargers that have exposed wires. I guess I mindlessly pull too hard over time. Duct tape would probably fix a few or made them stronger to begin with. They look a wreck but still work. (:

If I saw headphones with duct tape on them, I would have thought they were fixed. Come on now, who doesn't know duct tape fixes everything?

I suppose OP's mother would be one example.

Well now you've avoided the damaging of the wires altogether so it worked out.

if they were new then why would you have to put tape on them. I've never had to fix something that was new.

It's called preventative measures. The duct tape becomes a kind of shield for the wire and connection to help save them from damage. If you protect something well enough to begin with, you won't have to fix it.

I still don't understand this. I take good enough care of my headphones that they don't NEED protective tape on them. What do people do to their headphone wires that requires them to be duct taped to begin with? I've never had problems with wires being damaged.

I can't say I blame her I would have thought it was a patch job myself. the tape may have protected the casing from getting cut a little more, but in no way was it going to protect wire quality or keep the wires from breaking like normal. All you really did is cause confusion and waste tape OP. YDI

Do you have a history of being a hoarder OP? Your mother could have thrown out automatically because of your issues with hoarding. She was just trying to help you if that is the case so you don't turn into a mega hoarder and can't even live in your own home anymore. If you don't have a history like that then I see no real reason why she should have thrown out your headphones without asking you despite what it looks like, you never know how certain things are suppose to look. Have a talk with her and hopefully avoid problems like these in the future.

I'm guessing they're beats, sorry bud.

I guess you need wireless headphones - for a different reason than everyone else.

Again, why can't people ask the owner of something before assuming said something is crap and throw it out? Even if they where old and broken, she have no right to throw away someone else's stuff. Just the right to make you keep it in your room.
