The most likely explanation is that you adopted her and she was already pregnant, but that would mean you couldn't have had her for more than 2 months. Crappy corporate stores can't tell the difference between males and females and put them together. Rats also have a strong mating instinct and can smell the opposite sex strongly. They'll do anything to get it on.

I misread that as rabies as well. Also, rats are supposed to be kept in at least pairs because they're social creatures. If kept alone, they get bored and start "barbering", and can potentially stop eating due to loneliness.
