Your new roommate sounds like a responsible, dependable individual -- NOT! Pay the rent, change the locks, keep any shit of his that might be in your possession, find a new roommate and collect their half of the money UP FRONT.....

Pay for both, but when he gets back, tell him how much he owes you for the rent you paid for him. Take something of his as collateral just so you can be sure he gets it paid off and never does it again :D
