Today, our school had tryouts for chorus. Everybody sang a snippet of the song together until the teacher stopped us, saying it sounded awful. He singled me out and told me to sing alone. After I sang the part, he said, "Son, your gift to God will be silence." FML

LOL at 42. And people who cant sing usually try out for the chorus. WHICH BUGS THE SHIT OUTTA MEH. If you cant sing then dont get in on that. Your teacher was smart, and did you a favor. A big one. I wouldnt have been good if you persued singing if you sounded like boy who is going through puberty with a huge ***** stuck in his ass. To me that doesnt sound pleasent.

Sounds like pretty much all the boys in our choir. They should just do away with them and have an all girls choir. One day we sang the National Anthem without them and it sounded so good. Make sure you can freakin' sing if you join choir. Or at least try. I didn't think I could sing before I joined choir but these days I am one of the strongest in our Alto section . . . after some[a lot of] practice of course.

nah, your gift to god will be to smach his bitch ass in the face = D

Comment #46 is void due to fail. OP; respect your teachers massive wisdom. Through a witty; funny remark; he may have just saved you embarrassment on a bigger scale later. You didn't deserve that little bit of humiliation; but it's not a FML either.

I take it you go to a Christian school? If so, your life sucks anyways...if not, sue his ass for mentioning religion.

As a music educator, I am embarrassed and angered by your teacher's remark - there's no such thing as being tone deaf - if you can hear the difference between a woman's voice and a man's voice, you can recognize pitches. In my opinion, your teacher should be fired. PLEASE don't give up on singing - feel free to quit that choir because you obviously won't learn much from that "teacher," but if it's something you enjoy doing, keep doing it! Choir should be a place to help one learn healthy methods of singing and to EXPRESS YOURSELF. I hope that you realize that you CAN sing and continue to do so :-)

What your teacher said was flat out wrong. Even if you are a terrible singer, which I'm sure you are not, that is the wrong thing to say. As a music teacher myself I have one thing to say...if you like it, do it. Don't take comments like that from anybody including a professors. Seriously, it doesn't matter if they are professionals, your peers, or respected musicians. Nobody should tell you that you shouldn't give music a try and nobody should tell you that you should stop. It is a teachers job to help you perform to the best of your ability and comments like that mean they have failed you as a teacher. To all of the haters out there that say, "If you can't sing then don't join choir." Sorry, you're wrong as well. Music is for everybody...no exceptions. And despite what many will tell you, singing properly is far from easy and the only way to get better is by doing it. To me it sounds like your professor is a typical elitist who sees the performance as the final goal of the class. Whereas the true focus should be developing EVERY student as a musician. In the end...forget the teacher and the class. Go out and sing everywhere...in the shower, on the streets, in the car. Who cares if you're good or not, if you like it...do it! One final note, don't be afraid to complain about that teacher's comments to the administration. Many will say I am blowing this out of proportion but those comments are inexcusable. I may sound harsh but it is because of teachers like that, that music is being cut out of schools plain and simple. Anybody who thinks that comments such as that belong in the classroom shouldn't be allowed to even consider the possibility of teaching. ...Aim high and keep singing!!! P.S. the comment above me (#50) is right on the money as well!
