Who is to say that it was the same dog. The mind can sometimes trick us into seeing what we want to see. I believe that it may have been a dog with a lot of similarities the OP saw.

Obviously the parents no longer wanted the dog but didn't want to tell the OP "we didn't want the dog any more and dumped him at a shelter, get over it" and it was easier to lie to the OP and say "sorry, the dog died and we had him cremated at the vet while you were at work/school/whatever." This way, they didn't come off as the shit parents who got rid of the family dog and didn't have to listen to the OP bitch and moan about it. They did not expect to be caught so now they're just the shit parents who lied about it. Honestly though, they are the parents and it is their home. If they no longer wanted the dog, then there was probably nothing the OP could have done about it anyway. And frankly the fact that the dog is STILL not rehomed after all this time tells me he isn't any prize of a pet so the parents probably hated him for a reason.
