Today, someone sent my boss a CD full of documents for an upcoming trial. It's my job to sort through the evidence, so he gave it to me. I looked on the CD. There's only one file; a 1020-page PDF of all the documents we need, and the pages weren't scanned in order. FML

More like you were ****** 1020-times to Sunday

Oh fudge. Well you got to take the rough with the smooth I suppose. Hang in there OP!

At least you have a job, more than a lot of people have.

This sounds almost exactly like my job. Welcome to the bullshit work club! Copy the entire CD to your computer then extract each document (page ranges) and delete them from the original document as you go. I know it seems like a total pain in the ass but I do this at least twice a week. People in my office get sent large documents but only need a few chapters out of the middle. I have it down to a science - 1. Find out what page range those chapters are 2. Extract those pages as a new document 3. Take that new document and find the page range of the first section 4. Extract that first section as a new document, deleting it in the process (it's one of the options) 5. Save that new document. 6. GOTO 3. Wash, rinse, repeat until done.

No doubt it was the opposition who did this to mess with you guys. Make sure your boss knows of the condition in which you got the document; maybe they can screw with the opposition in a similar fashion.

This is supposedly pretty common in business law, and is usually considered legitimate grounds for a continuance. (though you'll probably have to still pay your lawyer for an appearance to ASK for the continuance - if you're a real asshole, you can look into billing the ****** who sent you the documents that way. There's a certain amount of minimal usefulness that's required, but it is really up to the judge to decide.)

EASY SOLUTION! There are a lot of software that can split and/or merge PDF files. Some paid, some free. To find them, either: A) Google these words: -split PDF file pages- or B) Go to download.com and search for: -PDF split- Good luck!
