Today, the bank called saying we were late in the mortgage payments. I was puzzled because three months ago I issued a big cheque to my mum pay off the mortgage. I just discovered that she instead lost it all at the casino. Turns out, she's become a compulsive gambler ever since dad passed away. FML

Today, the bank called to ask when were we going to make the mortgage payments for our family home. We were several months late. I had been transferring my mother the cash to make the mortgage payments after she lost her money gambling. She absolutely promised she would stop several months ago. I guess she lied. FML

Whoever commented with "pay your mortgage yourself" is an idiot. It is made VERY clear from the wording of the FML that the OP lives with his mother. It is also made VERY clear that the OP is giving a cheque to his mother, with his OWN money to help her pay off the mortgage. OP, FYL. Get her some help, seriously. And don't allow her access to any funds that aren't hers. It's just going to get worse from here if she doesn't get help now.

My fathers a gambler and it may sound harsh but my trick is that when he says he needs money to NEVER give him cash or a check without the name of the company written in. I'm a family counselor now and I can promise its the same as having a drug addiction they can't control themselves and the love for you will not trump that.
