It's true that she definitely should have known about prop 8. But, just because her partner doesn't want to get married doesn't mean that she isn't committed to her and she doesn't love her... some people just don't want to be "married," even if they want to spend the rest of their lives with that person. After all, marriage is just a legal contract (and not much more in our country) that can end fairly easily.
