Today, the grades for one of my courses were released. The class average was higher than that which the department allowed, so the professor had to scale everyone's marks down to meet the policy. I ended up failing because my class was too smart. FML

Are they even allowed to do that?

"My class was too smart" is a fancy way of saying "I was too stupid"

Sounds like an American thing. FYL for being born in a ridiculous country.

Another thing that makes my country America look bad. I want to say that America is good, but they aren't helping that much!

Since you're Asian you wouldn't understand being at the bottom of the class :(

That is so bogus....for sooo many reasons. 1) Have you ever heard of a thing called studying? Not cramming the night before....but studying consistently throughout the semester, not partying. 2) Are you freakin kidding me? "Sorry, you all worked too hard so I have to lower your grade." Yeah, the whole thing sucks, but if you had STUDIED then you wouldn't be failing. Obviously it wasn't too hard of a class if people did too well.

It's a policy some schools have to prevent teachers from giving too much credit. IT could be a case where the teacher did give too much credit, or it could be a case of one class having and shit-ton of smart people. If the grade was curved, someone has to fail, so he could have been at the bottom of the class, but could have had something like a 90%, with everyone having higher grades. Still, he thought he was going to pass and have every reason to believe it until the grades came out. It's the same as your boss telling you you're going to get a big bonus, but your bonus was canceled because the other workers worked too well.

I understand the concept. And it's the average that matters, as stated above. Therefore, the grades only needed to be lowered enough to bring the average to where it needed to be. Unless they wanted the average to be failing, there was no reason for him to fail

No, that's why dumb people hate teachers.

Hold on though; unless everyone failed, your mark must have been quite low if scaling it back caused you to fail.

Yeah, that's basically what I came here to say...therefore, YPDI (you probably deserved it).

Shame on you for not taking the class seriously enough to work for the grade. If a scale-back caused you to fail, you weren't doing well in the first place. YDI, and I hope you learn from your mistake.

Agreed 100%. If it's worth your time, it's worth doing it right!

Don't worry, when you eventually flunk out McDonalds will still be hiring.
