if you break up with someone for any reason, stick with that decision, otherwise you'll end up breaking up with them again for that exact same reason further down the track. atleast you learnt that lesson relatively quickly

I hate to say it, but I think he probably just wanted to end the relationship on his terms. You ended it and it slighted his ego, so he got you to "come back" and he stood you up so that he feels validated, like he got the last word in.
