Today, the shy girl in my class decided to bring a cake to share with everyone, since it was her birthday. Excited about the cake, I got everybody to sing "happy birthday" for her, only to realize too late that nobody in the class know her name, myself included. FML

That shy girl is your school's equivalent of me. YDI for being unwelcoming and self-centered, asshole.

I sympathize. I guess OP just kinda wanted to be decent (I mean, would you just take someone's cake without acknowledging them?) without really thinking about the fact that she had no idea who the girl was. It's REALLY easy if you have a lot of friends to not try to make any new ones, so that doesn't make OP an asshole. Also, shy people shouldn't blame anyone if no one knows their names; if you want to be known, you have to put yourself on the radar of other people. In short, both of you (OP and shy girl) are kind of the blame, but it's not really a big deal, just really awkward.

This is very sad. Especially because the gesture of bringing in the cake, to celebrate with this class, seems to show that she wants to reach out and have more friends. It also probably means that having not so many friends (this doesn't mean she has no friends, just none in the class) wasn't a choice. It would be really nice if the op (after kind of trying to make a nice gesture already through singing to her, it just didn't work out) would try and talk to her a bit.

I feel more sorry for her than you.. But on the other hand if she wasn't so shy maybe more people would know her name

It is HER who should have written that FML, she must have felt a hundred times worse than you. You better make it up to her ASAP. But when you do, DO try to show some egnuine interest in her and not just pity-friendship. That is even worse. I should know that.

Better find out her name. It's going to come in handy in about 3 months when the leader of the SWAT team turns to you and says "OK, she's holed up in there with an AK-47 threatening to murder her classmates, but we can talk her out of this by establishing rapport. What's her name?"

And that has to do with you because....?

omg I just moderated the story from the actual girl and it said today I brought in cake for my birthday, I'm kind of shy and one of the more talkative girls decided to sing me happy birthday. no one new my name. fml
