I'm not saying that all midgets are disfigured. what I meant was that that particular person has an actual disfigured face. And yes, I do have a legitimate reason for my fear. I don't feel inclined to share that reason because then all of the people who already believe I was being an ass will still not agree with me. the last thing I wanted to do was hurt/insult her.

You're expecting us to sympathize with you for being insensitive to someone with a handicap? FHL for being a "disfigured midget." When I was in middle school, my friend's dog jumped on me and bit me. I had a phobia of dogs for a while. Guess what? I got over it. I'm betting you never got bitten by a midget before. Having a phobia is not an excuse. That's a behavioral handicap that can be controlled and corrected.
Just because you got over your phobia doesn't mean everyone else can you insensitive asshole.

as a person with anxiety disorder and multiple phobias, I can tell you that they're not something that can be "controlled and corrected" without something like medication or therapy. if you have a serious phobia not just a regular fear, it's almost impossible to "get over". even if you acknowledge that it's unreasonable, you still have the fear. think next time. and OP, I'm sorry! I feel bad for you and the little person. it's just a shitty situation
I have a phobia of dogs (especially large ones) and being inside an airplane. If the two were combined, I would divide by 0 to end it all.

You cannot help having a phobia. What you can help, but have chosen not to, is how you deal with it. Eg: Reducing it by taking steps to relieve it (exposure therapy and the like), or controlling how you react to it. You can't change your feelings, but your actions are your responsibility. And no, this isn't tut-tutting from someone on the outside of understanding phobic reactions.

I have a fear of looking like a sarcastic prick who doesn't give a ****. My shrink says I have to come on here every day and post three comments as part of my therapy. It's not helping my phobia, but the rash on my butt has cleared up.

If you hadn't felt the need to call them a "disfigured midget" in your FML, I might sympathize with you. Some people just have phobias of strange things and though you can learn to control them maybe you just haven't yet. Because of your need to insult the object of your fear, however, I think that you are just bigoted.

Its more politically correct now to call them little people. The word midget has become demeaning now because of how some people have started to use it. But I know alot of people don't know that, so OP probably didn't mean for it to come off in an insulting way.

The insulting part was actually the use of "disfigured" in the discription. Even if that "little person" was disfigured, it doesn't affect the post at all.
YDI. What an incredibly stupid fear. Get over yourself. Also there is no such thing as a midget any more. That term was used for people with a pituitary deficiancy. Something completely different from people who have dwarfism.

Maybe the person didn't have dwarfism. My best friend is legally a dwarf and so is her mother but they don't have dwarfism.
