Today, we finally got wireless Internet. My mom won't let us open any doors or windows in fear that it might "let the Internet out". It's 103 degrees in here. FML

I feel like this is easily solved by a 5 minute explanation of how wireless internet works. . .

I'm sure an explanation was attempted

your mom is truly an idiot. even if the doors are closed, the Internet signal still "gets out". your mom makes my immigrant mom an expert at technology

Zzzz i wasn't aiming the at you "c&*^%*&s" it was meant for the immigrant mom dude that was making a big pussy fuss out of it. we on the same side dude !

i wasnt aiming that at you "c&*^%*&s". it was meant for the idiot son of the immigrant mom who decided it was okay to ******* make a comment like that ..

Closing doors and windows won't prevent Internet leakage. You need to buy a special AntiNetLeak shield. Contact your provider about it. Okay...that was a joke. On a more serious note: OP - tell your mum that wireless Internet doesn't work like that.Any neighbour within range will be able to see if you're connected to the Net no matter how many doors or windows she closes. And unless you have a secure password (i.e. combination of numbers, letters or special characters), any of those neighbours could still leech off your network (if they know the password - like, if it's too easy, people may be able to crack it.) - even with the doors or windows closed. That way - if you have a password - and someone tries to leech (basically - use without your knowledge or permission) off your Internet, they'll have to input a password to connect to your wireless network. It won't change the functionality of the Internet or anything - it just prevents your wireless from unwanted users. You can also set it so that any computers in your house automatically connect - my laptop will automatically connect to our network. (I'm typing this on my laptop which is connected to the wireless at home. No issues here. Also I'm studying IT and have been for the past 7.5 years (4 years in high school + 3.5 years of my degree.) Now hopefully you'll be able to use the Net with the doors AND windows open.

get a life! you really felt the need to explain what the word password means? I hate people like you!

I really don't think op needed all that info, dumb ass. way to try and make yourself look smart - and fail. the op knows that shit, it's OP's mom that doesn't, hence the FML. nice try though.

@54 - No, but I think I've heard of him.

Like I said to 57, I was only trying to be nice. And what I wrote was for the benefit of OPs mum, not OP. I wasn't trying to be or look "smart". I was trying to help. OPs mum is obviously stupid. If I was in her position I would feel more comfortable receiving help from someone who knew what they were talking about. I'm not trying to say that others who commented here don't know. (It'd be like - say you have someone who's really bad at English - the subject, not the language. I'd think they'd feel better taking advice from someone who's actually studied it, or is at a higher level, rather than say their classmate who's getting really good marks. At least, that's how I'd feel). I guess maybe I assumed OPs mum was the same. I wasn't trying to do that.

people? maybe? if you're going to mock me at least learn how to spell you big **** stain!!

usnwife 18

because someone on FML saying they know what they are talking about is so much more credible than say, calling tech support? riiight...

geez 57, calm down, he was just trying to help. maybe you should get a life and quit hounding people that are innocently posting comments to help op.

57 he is an IT professional, are you? didn't think do. next Time you have a virus or worm (doubt you even know what that is) don't come running to geek squad cause guess what? there IT pros too and apparently you hate them. I am cisco network certified so I guess you hate me too. so let's get one thing straight, IT DOESNT MATTER WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT US! we have a good job and that's more than you can say! with the attitude you have I can assume 2 things. 1) you don't like anyone who knows more than you and 2) your a pompous ass. you are not going to go anywhere in life.

Jazzalyn 10

Ahh...that is true. Even if what I say is true, which it is, there's no way to verify it - so you've got a good point there. (This is why I shouldn't write FML comments at 1am in the morning. Not good at thinking rationally.)

wow! its incredible how our generation knows a lot about internet than the ones before us.. anyways shes kinda dumb though :/

You ought to download massive amounts of kiddie ****, go on vacation and tip off the Feds as what goes on at your house. That'll teach your mom about letting the internet out. Wireless signals pass easily through windows whether they are closed or not. Glass windows, that is, when you're talking about M$'s OS, nothing happens easily;)

Is your mom FOB? My parents are kinda like that too

Can't let that tricky Internet get out again. :D Sorry OP. Maybe theres a fan somewhere.
