How you handle the situation depends on the age of the kid and sitter, I suppose, but that's definitely not okay. If it was an older teen/adult babysitting, I would report them/get the police involved. I wouldn't want to let someone who hit my kid get off with just a chastising and a lost job, lest they try for another sitting job...

That would be the last thing that "babysitter" would ever say to me. And what's with people making up random ages and excuses? Leaving visible marks on a child is NEVER ok.

Other than filing charges against the sitter, as hard as it is you need to ask your kid if this kinda thing has ever happened before and if yes you need to have them talk to someone or take them to a therapist. These things scar. Also, don't hate yourself over it, it really isn't your fault.
