Today, while at the Golden Gate Bridge, I spotted a large group of Asians trying to take a picture. Trying to help, I slowly say, "You... want me... take picture?" while using hand motions. The man looks at me and says, "No thanks asshole, I got it," in plain English. FML

That's extremely rude. You made yourself look bad! They probably know more than one language which is a lot to say, aka you're the one that needs to be talked to like an idiot.

Good job, douchebag. Aren't you just the perfect little diplomat?

Oh my god! This same thing happened to me in italy. I'm not even italian. While i was sitting by myself on the bench at the airport, these 4 ladies who were apparently from Louisiana came up to me with their camera making obvious camera-taking motions and said slowly "will you....take....picture? ...of us!?" i simply smiled wordlessly and took the picture. they thank me with a simple "gratzi!' and i say in plain english "you're welcome" we talked for about 4 hours after that until i had to take my flight.

i'm so disappointed im all the way at the bottom and no one will see this. fyi, i chose YDI. but i'm an upper level linguistics student and have a few things to say: [1] there's this linguistic phenomenon called "foreigner talk." when you think someone doesn't speak your language, you automatically talk louder, with a higher pitch, don't use perfectly grammatical speech, and throw in gestures. [2] what OP did crossed the line of "foreigner talk" and was indeed racist. [3] #88: yes, ppl do travel to foreign countries to learn the language. you learn better by this amazing thing called total immersion which is when you learn to speak the language because you have no choice but to. this of course doesn't work for everyone, especially if you're a reluctant immigrant which is why a ton of ppl have grandparents who refuse to learn english. [4] perhaps #151 should venture out of conneticut every once in a while.
