Today, while at the Golden Gate Bridge, I spotted a large group of Asians trying to take a picture. Trying to help, I slowly say, "You... want me... take picture?" while using hand motions. The man looks at me and says, "No thanks asshole, I got it," in plain English. FML

poor judgement on your part winner @ #50 i'm racist wana fight about it?

OP: Just to be clearn, when people say you should determine if they speak English before you start slowing down your speech, they DON'T mean asking, "You speakee Engrish?" Oh. And you're a moron.

I think the biggest thing is that in America there are a lot of Asian-looking people, a good chunk of which ONLY speak English, so to assume that they didn't is just kind of silly. Back in Austria, if I saw an Asian-looking person, I could be more certain they didn't speak German, just because we really don't many that actually reside in the country. However, it's understandable if you live in an area of the US where you rarely seen Asian-looking people. At that point, I think I would have just acted like I didn't speak English or had some sort of problem to avoid embarrassment.

sigh - american ignorance. @54 - he said the picture was at the Golden Gate Bridge... California has a VERY high rate of asian residents (and yes, tourists). Also, to everyone here that doesn't speak another language... speaking slower doesn't help.... its just degradinga t that point... Yes, your intentions were good but next time talk to them the way you would want to be spoken to. Normally. IF THEN you find out they don't speak english, use gestures.... but don't talk to them like they are 5 years old.

Sure speaking slower helps because a) words are sepparated more clearly and b) it gives the listener more time to translate a word before the next one arrives. English is my third language and for a long time, I would've had no chance at all understanding someone like Yahtsee "Zero Punctuation" Croshaw, but understanding slower-speaking people was (and, of course, still is) no problem.

You're an idiot. Just because I'm American makes me a racist asshole? Hypocrite.

I have to say it's really f-ing ridiculous for you to attribute the OP's behavior to "American ignorance". I take offense to that because I am American and I would never just assume someone couldn't speak English. I would take the time to find out if they could or not before going with hand gestures and slow speaking. Secondly, slowing your speech does help people understand because as the commenter above said it gives them a few more seconds to translate a word or phrase before trying to translate the next. This is true with any language not just English. The faster people talk the harder it is for someone to follow the conversation and people who are fluent in a language tend to speak a hell of a lot faster than someone who is only learning. If someone talks too fast than the person who is trying to follow can wind up missing the next few words completely because their brain is still trying to translate the last five.

wow, everyone is so uptight... can we get some location-based statistics to see where all these bible belt comments are coming from? I'm asian and the majority of my friends are of asian descent. We talk shit, laugh, joke, etc. about ourselves and the hilarious stereotypes associated with "being asian in America" all the time. Don't be so serious, seriously. Btw, still hilarious. just shared it with coworkers & friends who in fact are ALL Asian. They're lol'ing @ this fml as well.

YDI for speaking like an idiot. Speak proper English first then broken with hand signs if they don't understand. Also never assume, asians take pictures of everything and like to flash the peace sign in pictures.

LOL!!!! Fav'd! That's what you get for assuming shit!!

"I'm asian and the majority of my friends are of asian descent. We talk shit, laugh, joke, etc. about ourselves and the hilarious stereotypes associated with "being asian in America" all the time. Don't be so serious, seriously." Exactly. It's funny. Laugh. Call him an idiot in a joking way. But don't call him racist and don't call us assholes for calling him an idiot (which he probably knows he is).
