Today, while opening up to a few friends about how I was sexually abused as a child, one of them blurted "Pics or it didn't happen." How did the others react? With outrage? No, just with awkward chuckling. FML

Today, a guy made fun of sexual assault victims, and laughed when he heard they’re getting money and support. He also said I look like his next victim. I hit him, unapologetically. My friends told me to apologise, and that he’s really a great guy. No longer my friends. Talk shit, get hit. FML

Today, in a waiting room, my 4-year-old daughter told me she saw two guys kissing. I quietly explained that some men like men, they're gay, and normal like everyone else. I was pleased with myself until the woman across from me scoffed and muttered, "Disgusting." FML

Today, I was in a support group talking about how my sister and I were raised in a cult. Never one to be outdone, the loud mouth of the group piped up and scoffed, “Oh please! If it didn’t make the news and no one died, then it wasn’t a cult!” Sorry I wasn’t murdered. It was still abusive as fuck. FML

Today, at a mind-numbingly boring support session, everyone was talking about their hardships. One guy was talking about losing his leg in a car accident. I was half-asleep and asked without thinking, "Did you ever find it?" I almost shat my pants at the roomful of death glares that followed. FML

Today, I was telling my friends a story. I added a few "embellishments" to make it more intense. One my friends piped up with, "I was with you, half of what you just said wasn't true". It's now all over Facebook and I'm known as "The Bullshitter". FML

When I got to the point, she rolled her eyes, stopped me and said, "Why can't you just tell me something nice? I don't want to hear about it, it's triggering me." I think that many people tend to chuckle/laugh in high stress situations, especially if they aren't used to them. For example, when one of my best friends was injured, the other started laughing like crazy (almost to the point of tears) even though she swears she was extremely concerned/worried/scared the entire time. So if they followed up the chuckling with genuine concern and support towards you, I could MAYBE understand that a bit more. But the comment? That's not just a reflex, that's trying to make a serious situation laughable, which is pretty horrible, tactless, and insensitive imo. Fyl.

It can be infuriating, my mom laughs out of nerves in wildly inappropriate times and just apologizes but doesn't see how insulting it is when someone is trying to talk to you seriously about something. She's oblivious about a lot of things and doesn't get how now ok it is even if her intent wasn't bad.

Your mother likely can't help it. It can be an automatic response to awkward situations. It's not that she doesn't understand that it is innappropriate but in the moment she can't formulate a coherent response and has to break the silence somehow. I would bet cashmoney that the same sort of thing happens to you from time to time.
