Today, while working customer service, I instructed a customer to press the pound key on her cellphone. She hesitated a moment before asking, "Um, the pound key? You mean the hashtag, right?" FML

Okay I never knew it was referred to as pound key either... In Aus it's been called the hash key before hashtags even existed

Was she British? I just had to google "pound key"- first time I've ever heard it called that. We call it a hashtag here in the UK.

Well, that doesn't change the fact that is wrong. It wouldn't be 'hashtag', it would be 'hash key'. Twitter called it 'hashtag' because of the use of the hash key in tags...

# were called hashtags long before it became a viral term. This does not deserve an fml it's just proof that for some reason humanity has made it a trend to hate on absolutely everything or everyone. The problem with the world is not its stupidity,it's the superiority complex that somehow became a fad

OK, so we've figured out that no-one outside of the US calls the hash key the 'pound key'. But now I'm really puzzled why hashtags aren't 'pound-tags' in the US?!

Ive commented other FML's before in the past about hash tags. I think its a very stupid trend that started over the internet. Hopefully itll die off. I mean... #You#can't#tell#me#this#isn't#idiotic. Hate that shit. damn.
