Oh hell no
History of the '#': pound key then number sign now known as hashtag.
I know that Americans think they are the centre of the universe. Just to inform you there are other countries in this world and we have our own way of saying things so there is no need to be so harsh.
Your argument would be perfectly applicable if the customer service rep wasn't speaking to a native of the United States of America, same as OP
#120, I doubt that he is replying to the post, rather to all the commenters who are bitching at someone using hash- to refer to the number sign
Those who keep bringing up that it's called the "hash key" other places are spouting irrelevant information. Unless you call it the "hashtag" key, shut up and stop defending the ignorant girl OP is talking about.
Really? So if you wanted them to press the '8' you'd say 'press the 8 key,' would you? There's nothing wrong with just saying the symbol and not 'key.' That symbol, for the internet generation, is a hash tag. Yes, if she's American she should know it stands for pound, too. But she just showed a little uncertainty and checked she had it right by asking about the use she's more familiar with. OP is making a mountain out of a molehill.
The hash tag is a Twitter feature that is used so that people can search for tweets on a common theme. It shows what topics are trending (are most popular). Facebook now uses the same technique for searching fir posts on a theme. Young people who use these social media a lot have also started using it to give a subject to what they're saying. So they might write something like, 'Chemistry teacher just gave us a surprise test. #thingsthatshouldn'thappenonyourbirthday'
And this is why I don't like to be part of my generation -.-
Wow. That's sad
World's loudest facepalm in 3...2...1
I'm sorry but it's not really fml they only asked a simple question
Well in the UK it has always been "press the hash key".Twitter just ruined it.
