Today, while working customer service, I instructed a customer to press the pound key on her cellphone. She hesitated a moment before asking, "Um, the pound key? You mean the hashtag, right?" FML

Why is it called the pound key? Why not just number?

I don't really see what the issue is. Nowadays we don't really use the word "pound". We usually use "hashtag". She's probably used to that.

Why is everyone down on people who know it as a hash symbol. Only the US calls it a pound symbol. Most of the world used lb for pound, as the US did at one point, and others use # for number or hash or sharp. And it's not some crime to use social media and be familiar with its symbols.

She could have at least said " Your talking about the key tat stands for number right?"

She would've shit bricks if you told her # meant number

pound sign = £ #= hash standard English!

I am from Ireland. I have NEVER heard of a 'pound' key. It's always been 'hash key'. I originally thought the OP was talking about the money pound key - this one - £. And then I realised that he said 'cell phone', not 'mobile phone' and I got really confused.
