Anything a 2-year old can reach is game to be broken/torn/eaten. If it was valuable you certainly needed it out of reach. On a separate issue,if your wife is too tired to stay awake with the child or he is waking without waking your wife then the kid needs to be in a play-pen or sleeping in a cot so that he can't get hurt while she sleeps.
