We got a reader!

Today, my new boyfriend came over to my apartment for the first time. Up until now I thought he was great, but when he spotted the book I'm currently reading next to my couch, he uttered the immortal question, "Why do you read?" FML
I agree, your life sucks 29 688

I don't think I would be able to be with someone who could utter that question in a serious manner.

I feel you OP. I love reading, to me they're better than movies because you feel like your right there and you can let your imagination run wild. It's a shame some people don't see reading the way we do.

You should have responded. Why do you breathe?

Ehh, I love to read and I'm pretty good at it. But I don't actually sit down with a book and read it, just not amusing to me.. I prefer jokes, quotes, poems, more entertaining material to me. Books get dull personally.

Who cares if he doesn't like reading? Or asks you why you read. Are you that shallow of a person?

That's not shallow at all. Those are her interests and it's a turn-off for her to date an anti-intellectual.

Maybe he asked the question wrong. Maybe he was wondering why you were reading that particular book? Then again if that's the case it wouldn't make it to FML. Sorry op.

Maybe it was just an incredibly awkward way of trying to get to know you...

Am I the only one thinking of Bill Hicks? "Whatcha reading for?" "not, what are you reading, what are you reading for, shit, I dunno maybe so I don't end up a waitress in a ****** waffle house" I miss him!

Maybe what you heard isn't what he meant to say. Perhaps, rather than "Why do you bother reading?" he meant something like, "What motivates you to read, pleasure or learning?" If he's a new boyfriend, maybe give him the benefit of the doubt until you get all those communication nuances fixed.

maybe he wants to know why you read, not saying that reading is stupid or pointless, give him a chance
