We got a reader!

Today, my new boyfriend came over to my apartment for the first time. Up until now I thought he was great, but when he spotted the book I'm currently reading next to my couch, he uttered the immortal question, "Why do you read?" FML
I agree, your life sucks 29 688
You deserved it 3 790

Same thing different taste

I don't think I would be able to be with someone who could utter that question in a serious manner.

I feel you OP. I love reading, to me they're better than movies because you feel like your right there and you can let your imagination run wild. It's a shame some people don't see reading the way we do.

If that had been me, I would have at least given him a chance to clarify the question, but if he really meant it in the "Why bother/That's a stupid hobby" sense I'd walk him right back out the door. It's one thing if you're just not into it, but to act shocked that someone else is shows ignorance.

I take influence from Henry Rollins when I refuse to date someone who doesn't read.

I hate reading too. If you wouldn't be with someone over that, you should be alone anyways.

Really? You're going to judge because he asked you a seemingly legit question? He may be curious as to why you read. So tell him why you do. It's not difficult.

Why DO you read? Do you realize that everyone has different hobbies, and reading is not everybody's hobby? If so, why is it wrong to ask about someone else's hobby out of curiosity?
