Why would you even lie about knowing a language? I can't imagine how that would help anyone obtain a job (unless you were going for a job as a Spanish translator or something) o.O
Actually, knowing other languages is an asset. For example, in Canada, knowing French is definitely something a lot of employers would see as an advantage. Also Chinese, Tagalog, Punjabi, etc because there are a lot of people from different counties here. Definitely an asset, but it's stupid to lie about it.
That makes sense. I was thinking that if the OP was going for a job that wasn't language-related, it seems odd to lie about knowing a language, since there are so many more...uh...'practical' things that one can lie about on a resume. With that being said, lying of a resume to begin with is just silly. Especially if its something that's easy to prove wrong (like a language).
Well, the OP lives in Texas. If it's anything related to customer service, he would definitely need to know Spanish. There's a lot of people in Texas that speak Spanish as their first language and prefer to speak it. Most people around these parts take it in high school as well.
Also, knowing many languages might show that you are intelligent and you learn easely. About languages or any other assets you have. It might not be directly connected to the job you want, but it still counts in for an avaluation of your personality.
I presume you just had to turn around and walk out, right? You won't be doing that again!
Lol! Can we say "pendejo"??
I could just picture that happening. As OP is walking in and about to sit down, the employer speaks in Spanish and the OPs feet turn in the other direction. haha
Eh we've all embellished a little on a resume... it's a risk we take, but must be prepared for the consequences. Too bad Op.
Yeah, but there's a difference between a little embellishment and flat-out lying about knowing an entire language.
"A little embellishment" is saying you speak Spanish fluently when your skills are mediocre. Saying you speak Spanish when you don't have any skills at all is pure stupidity, especially if you will actually need the language on the job.
While "conversational" is not quite fluent, it was downright asinine for the OP to even suggest that he/she even knew the language. Still a terrible idea.
Actually, no. I've never lied on my CV and I've never had any difficulty finding a job. Don't be the idiot who everyone laughs at who can't do the job they were hired for.
You totally deserve it! Why would you lie on your resume at the first place? Are you that stupid?
So I guess you lied because you really wanted the job? There's no such thing as shortcuts in life.
just don't lie!!!!!
That's why mine says I know basic spanish. If you want to be lazy and a liar, at least do it right.
Te lo mereces! That was really, truly stupid of you! Of all the things to lie about, you choose language? Wow, just dumb!

YDI. Why would you risk that?
Great thinking OP. Did it ever occur to you that you might one day have to demonstrate the skills you put on a resume? You most definitely deserve it.
