You never know

Today, I was talking to my good friend's girlfriend. She mentioned being afraid of losing her job. Because she was still a teenager, I jokingly said, "Oh, like you're responsible for a whole family!" She is. FML

Most teenagers aren't responsible for a whole family. So who wouldn't jokingly say that. Either she is the mother of children or she is over 16 (in which she could easily move out if necessary, but probably wont because siblings would then be put into some kind of foster care). If shes taking care of her siblings with her parents around, why arent they on disability?... I feel for the kid who asks, its definitely not THAT typical of a situation.

I hope u offered to help or something.

way to trivialize someone's financial worries based on their age

My thought exactly. I hate it when people act like their lives and opinions are so much more important only because they're older. Teenagers are people too, you know, stop looking down on them. (and no, I'm not a teenager myself, I just think it's annoying)

I wish I could like this comment more then once...

It's not like you could have known, so it's not your fault.

Bad luck, just the wrong thing to say to the wrong person. Not really a FML for you but FHL for being in that kind of situation.

Joke? I don't really see it as a joke really. A bit saying, "What, is your whole family retarded?" (#3620839) YDI.

Either way, you were being very belittling about her concerns. Having a job is a legitimate need for many teenagers. YDI.

That was a bitchy thing to say, even if she wasn't.

Oké oké. You didn't knew, but you had to knew it because she is your GOOD friend's girlfriend. By that YDI.
