The problem is that he said he SETTLED for her. 'Settled' means he didn't WANT to choose to be with her and that she doesn't meet his standards but he doesn't think anyone who meets his standards would look his way. It means he has low self-esteem and self-confidence but has also destroyed HER self-esteem and self-confidence now because it means she is second best or just the only person who gave him a chance which is heart-breaking to hear, especially if you love the one who says it. Now all she'll be able to think about is whether he truly meant a single word he said to her for the two years, or if they were all lies to make her stay with him. So it truly is an 'FML' because this could destroy the very essence of who she is by leaving her with no self-confidence, no self-esteem and trust issues.
