Today, my mom mentioned how she loves a certain actor's "British" accent. I couldn't help but mention that there's no such thing, and that there are lots of different accents in Britain. She got pissed and lectured me for "lying" to her and trying to make her feel stupid. FML

You deserved it. Maybe it's a different accent technically, but in layman's terms, a British accent is perfectly valid, just like an American accent.

To be fair, we women like to live with the knowledge that if someone is from England, they have a "sexy British accent."

With all this talk about the different dialects between the English, Irish and Scottish; as well as the differences between the regions, I'm surprised no one's taken into consideration the Gaelic language. Tha gach uile dhuine air a bhreth saor agus co-ionnan ann an urram 's ann an còirichean. Tha iad air am breth le reusan is le cogais agus mar sin bu chòir dhaibh a bhith beò nam measg fhein ann an spiorad bràthaireil. All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.

you're right gracehi. I completely forgot that one. There's probably more that I'm even unaware of.

There are 5 celtic languages in the british isles. Gàidhlig (scottish), gaelige (irish north and south, which are both different but still the same language), manxx (isle of mann), cornish, and cymru (wales). There is also a 6th celtic language spoken in brittany (france) called breton.

My old boss was from England. She said she had a British accent. "British" covers all accents from the country because most people won't know enough to say "I like her Yorkshire accent". And people from England say "American accents" to cover accents from the USA. You were just being a tool.

Op you were just being a knowitall when you corrected your mom. Ok so if you wish to be uber picky you were right, but respect beats being right all the time. I'm from Louisiana so in my southern Louisiana accent I'm gonna tell you this, "y'all better be respectin your mama, fore she knocks your block off."

Sometimes when I travel, I am told I have an American accent. But I don't argue with them, because I'm not a douchebag.

It can be irritating for anyone to have their accent generalised with other people, whose voices sound not remotely similar. For instance, I have an Australian accent, but not the stereotypically broad version that you hear in the movies. When I speak to an American (yep, that's me generalising too), they usually ask if I'm from England.

Being right at the cost of inter personal relationships, yeah!! Good choice, being right and correcting people is far more important than being a nice person people want to be around!!

Someone once said: One often has to choose between being right and being happy.

I can't believe you gave my FML a shove and then accepted this one. Bite me, I boycott this site for TWO weeks.

Who gives a shit if there are different accents? No one even notices they just call it a British accent.

I don't think you were lying to her but you were obviously trying to make her feel stupid. You probably even started the correction with "Actually...".
