Today, my mom mentioned how she loves a certain actor's "British" accent. I couldn't help but mention that there's no such thing, and that there are lots of different accents in Britain. She got pissed and lectured me for "lying" to her and trying to make her feel stupid. FML

You deserved it. Maybe it's a different accent technically, but in layman's terms, a British accent is perfectly valid, just like an American accent.

To be fair, we women like to live with the knowledge that if someone is from England, they have a "sexy British accent."

YDI for being obnoxiously specific. You obviously knew what she meant; it's not necessary to be right all the time!

YDI for trying to be an obnoxious know-it-all. Of course there's such a thing as a British accent; it's just that there are different kinds of British accents, just like there are different kinds of American accents.

I think you were trying to make her feel stupid. Just like other posters said, while there are many 'British accents' it is accepted by many to generalize in this way.

Poor Mom. F her life for you being so particular. If you go to different parts of the states or Canada we have different accents, yet it's still an American accent...

It dosnt matter if there are different British accents if its from Britain it's a British accent. So the British accent does exsist and it was rude to pick at her.

Doesn't matter where in England the actor is from, it's still a British accent.

I'm English, I can differentiate between different regional accents in America..... Anyway. Give your mum the example of Daphne Moon in Fraiser who was from Yorkshire. That's a regional accent. Um.... I'm trying to think of other accents you might have on US telly.... Gordon Ramsay should be Scottish.

Yeah, "should" be Scottish. He speaks with an English accent.

Sorry OP, but no one likes anyone who comes off as a nitpicky know-it-all. YDI.

I do see where you're coming from and _technically_ you are right, yes. But if that's the case then there's also no such thing as an "Irish accent" because every single County in Ireland has a different accent too. You're just being pedantic.

Technically any accent that is originally spoken in Great Britain is a British accent, even if they are not all the same accent. You deserve it for being a wise-ass.
