...but why?

You know, you are probably really young and shy about this, but you're going to have your period for the next 4 decades, probably, so... it's ok. It's just a tampon. That's one of those situations where you need to go out, hold your head up high, look them in their stupid faces and say "oh sorry, I didn't know there was a line-up to watch me change a bloody tampon. Sick *****." And then spread rumors about how they snoop in the waste-bins for used hygiene products. Nah, but for real, this is just immature. Don't bother with them, a period's not worth that much hassle.
Sorry OP, girls can be very immature about that kind of thing in school when it's all new and your bodies start doing strange things you don't understand. But in a few years it will be completely normal and just another part of life for everyone the same age as you. Nothing to be embarrassed about at all.
I was at an all-girl's school for middle school and periods were never an issue of bullying or meanness - I don't recall anyone ever being immature about it.
Omg, you had a period??? What an embarrassing thing that literally no other female human experiences.. I'd be concerned if they weren't having them. They sound like a bunch of immature idiots. F their lives, honestly..
I haven't had a period in over 5 years, but that's only because my birth control alters it, otherwise, I'd have one. I'd never shame someone for that. I just can't get over how idiotic that is. Do you happen to be in middle school? Or possibly elementary school? Lol
Very idiotic!! But I remember being 12 and all the girls would giggle and gossip about the first girl to get their period, watching that girl awkwardly stuff a pad up her sleeve, make an excuse to leave class and scurry away to the toilets. Young girls can be pretty damn mean!
You must be in middle school because every girl from high school and up will randomly walk up to you asking for a tampon.
This is true. I have witnessed this bizarre female interaction. It’s all very strange but from what I gather based on observation is that in an attempt to prevent blood seeping through their clothing in public settings different female humans will approach another and ask for some sort of plastic device with what looks like an enlarged image of sperm in order to then insert aforementioned device into a bodily cavity. I have not determined which body cavity they insert it in as I dare not get to close in case the blood is not it’s own but that if it’s victims. I will continue my research and keep you updated on my findings.
Where they giggling and waiting for you? They could have been laughing at something totally unrelated to you. Maybe they didn't notice or care about you at all and you're just being self conscious?
It takes a while, but eventually you get over over people overhearing, most will go through the same thing each month (I say most due to effects birth control can have) for many, many years. The only suggestion I can think of for a potential next time; ask them if they waited because they needed a tampon and offer them one.
so you're the only girl at your school who gets her period? I'm just not getting the problem here
I'm sorry that happened to you. It's so dumb how all of us get our periods, and are aware of that, but still shame eachother for hearing the wrapper open, or say accidentally dropping one. Not to mention that half the time when we need a pad or tampon we feel like we have to hide it up our sleeves or in our purses.
If it happens again, calmly pat your used feminine products on one of their faces. As women, we should never be shamed for our periods. You have nothing to be embarrassed about. The same sentiment does not apply to the twats in the bathroom.

The heck with them. A period is natural. It is OK. But I know... it doesn't feel like that when we're young. Sorry op.
"Omg Stacy! I think some girl in the stall is eating a bag of chips." No, I'm on my freaking period. Unless it's middle school where they haven't gotten theirs yet, there's nothing really amusing about it.
