Today, I bought a device that plays a high-pitched sound to teach my dog to quit barking. She's smart enough to learn that as long as she barks loud enough and long enough, she can't hear it. Quite the opposite effect to what I was anticipating. FML

I would take it off. There are other ways to train your dog not to bark. You just need time to teach her.

a bullet works well in shutting dogs up.

Walk through her when she barks. Literally just walk right into her so she is forced to move. Show her that you're alfa. Dogs barking can be a sign of them showing dominance over a certain area. Don't allow her on the furniture anymore if you do already. Watch her and anytime you even see her mouth slightly open to bark, squirt her 4-5 times on the back of the neck with some water and say "uh uh" in a low, guttural sound.

But what if she wants to talk or needs to talk like alerting that someone is breaking in the house or something paranormal is there

Spray bottles filled with water work well....Tazer collars work better...."Bark activated" Tazer collars work best....and if you add a garden hose to the equation, there unstoppable.

What you actually need is a shock collar. They're specially designed to shock just hard enough to deter the dog from barking unnecessarily. Do get the one that they sell at the pet store, and not some unapproved one that may hurt the dog. I got one for my dog who used to bark all night, every night. He shortly learned to not bark for no reason. He didn't care about getting shocked if he needed to bark, but stopped barking for the sake of barking. After a few weeks he was trained and only barked when necessary, even when he wasn't wearing the collar.

And that is why huskies rock. They howl and sing instead of bark. ;) I actually found a spray bottle with water to be effective on my mutt.

OP wasn't outsmarted by a dog. S/he bought a device to make the dog stop barking, seeing as it has worked on hundreds and thousands of other dogs. It proved that the device was ineffective, not OP.

I second that! We have a collar for my dog that vibrates when she barks. She's good for a while then gets cocky with it. And I have a diploma in animal management! Yet I'm clueless what to do next!

You deserve it. It's a little cruel wanting and expecting your dog not to bark. It's like not allowing a person to talk. I feel bad for your dog.

It is not the same in the least. Have you ever had an annoying dog bark right outside of your freaking window while you're trying to sleep? If you refuse to train your dog not to bark, then you shouldn't be allowed to have a damn dog. It's inconsiderate to others who are stuck living near you. In fact, a lot of people will not put up with that crap and will call the pound, the police, or may even take matters into their own hands, which could result in your dog getting hurt or taken away. Dogs do not "talk" through barking, they "talk" through their body language. If you're so concerned about your dog being able to express itself, then learn their body language instead.
