Condolences

Today, I went to the funeral of my friend's brother. It was the first funeral I'd gone to, and I was really nervous. When the service finished, everyone went to pay their respects to the family. After I paid mine, they said, "Thank you for coming." I instictively replied, "My pleasure." FML

That is a correct response it shows that you care enough to go

I believe the proper term may be "my condolences for your loss"

I don't see anything wrong with this really. Sure, it could be interpreted that you enjoyed their death, but it really just sounds like "My pleasure, I'm happy to support you in your time of need". I wouldn't worry about it too much.

It's okay I'm sure they saw the extreme discomfort on your face.

Yesh, don't worry. Your comment shows you weren't dragged into this, and that you care. Unless you said it with a huge grin on your face and beaming eyes, it was quite fine. They appreciate it, I'm sure, and didn't think badly of it. Besides, honestly, I'm sure the family and everyone has a lot more to be emotional about than a simple comment made by you. Consider that.
