i hope im not to late DON'T PAY IT it is all a trap and a proper computer repair tech and usally get your stuff back for less then paying the $1500 paying for a code you will never get
you don't have to pay ransomware. The one time I had to deal with that I just did a system restore.
Remember the 3-2-1 backup rule: 3 copies, 2 on-site in case of drive failure, 1 off-site in case of ransomware.
make your roommate pay for it to get fixed.
Try booting your pc in safe mode and delete the virus if possible.
Like it or not, you may not get back that assignment either way
you do realize that you actually have to write down the encryption key somewhere and place it in a safe place right? depending on the type of encryption that you used, that hacker may actually not even be able to break it. It's not as easy as you think :(
My aunts computer had this on it and we took it to a repair shop. They said that even the government hasn't been able to crack it. And even if you pay they sometimes don't unlock your stuff. Reverting it back probably won't help either since the virus goes throughout your computer. My aunt ended up just getting her computer wiped. Sorry op!

Have your roommate pay the ransom, that is incredibly stupid. Hopefully you can find a way to track down those assholes.
That really sucks for you, but there is password protection for a reason. To keep unauthorized people especially family and room mates from using your computer without asking.
