Cracked

Today, my roommate came in, slamming the front door. I guess he doesn't know that you can't throw hot water on frozen windows. He came up all pissed and called his insurance because he'd cracked the windshield. We have the same car, in the same exact color. Turns out he threw the water on mine. FML

Key his name onto his car so he knows.

And now, you can safely sue him or sent him the bill! :D

One would think that given your cars are exactly the same, he'd take to looking at the license plate to make sure the car in question is his. Or hang something on the rearview mirror to differentiate between the two cars. Or realize that the car key he's holding won't work on the car he's attempting to get into because the car is yours. Or remember where he parked his car in relation to your car or the house. Or any number of other solutions. He sounds like a complete idiot. You need to do two things, OP. 1. Make your roommate pay for all necessary repairs. 2. Start looking for a different roommate. And I'd seriously advise looking into a paint job for one of those cars. It would make life easier for everyone concerned.

Are you joking? Do you know what a Sous Chef is?

Yeah, about that.... A sous chef is the second-in-command to the head chef of a kitchen. They take over the head chef responsibilities of the head chef is, for some reason, unavailable. I dunno if BeeSkwaird was trying to be funny or not... O_o

He probably meant Sioux Chieftain. The Sioux was an Indian American tribe before Columbus came and killed all of them. The Chieftain is of course their leader.

Even so, confusing "Sioux chieftan" with "sous chef" is pretty....ignorant. A sous chef is a cook. A Sioux chieftan is a Native American (of the Sioux people) of high rank. That's like confusing the words "whether" and "weather". The difference in spelling is relatively minor, but the definitions are so different it's absurd to confuse the two if you know their definitions.

And "Columbus killed them all"? I really do hope you're joking or using an offhand remark. That's equally ignorant. Columbus never got as far north as the Dakotas. The Sioux people still live, though in diminished numbers. The American military was responsible for most of the deaths during the 1800s, especially the Massacre at Wounded Knee. Research. Try it some time.

have you seen the movie bury my heart at wounded knee? it's a pretty good flick.

How could he NOT know that would break the windshield?

I throw hot water on to my car's frozen windshield and it never breaks. It allows the ice to melt quicker, how does it break the windshield?

The shock of going from one temperature (very cold) to a very different temperature (very hot) can cause the glass to break. I definitely wouldn't say never, just because it hasn't happened to you yet doesn't mean it won't happen. And it probably will, if you keep doing what you are doing, because the repeated stress will weaken the glass until the time that the shock is too much for it. And especially watch out if you get even a tiny chip, because extra stress caused by temperature shock combined with the chip will crack your glass for sure. If you have to use water, better to use cold water from the outside hose. It will still melt the ice but with less of a temp shock. Better yet invest in an ice scraper, they cost like $3 and in a few seconds you take all the ice off without having to risk breaking your windshield.

i do the same - well, i pour it on slowly instead of throwing it on. and only if the ice is so thick i either can't scrape through it or it would take me an hour to do so.

do you put HOT water on, or regular tap water? Regular water won't bother your windscreen. HOT water will.

I have to admit I've never heard of it working this way, usually the opposite. I learned that its when you add cold to something that is hot that the hot object breaks....i.e, pouring water onto a pyrex dish in the oven (Which my friend's mom did one time when we were kids)

it's the rapid change of temperature that does it - it works both ways, either going from hot to cold or cold to hot.

Well, he just admitted to vandalizing your car, so you need to get him to pay for it.

I bet the poor sap also doesn't know that you can't throw hot water on people. You should teach him.

That sucks, just trade cars with him or something. This is also an excellent oppurtunity to make him do shit for you and a fml for the car.

#30 - it's any kind of sudden, dramatic temperature change (although i've also seen it happen more often with cold water and a hot object than hot water and a cold object).

When my dad was in high school, some idiot threw a cooled lead figuring back into a pot of molten lead. Needless to say that didn't end well. I also had a friend who cracked his windshield by cranking the defrost before his windshield had warmed up at all.

that's weird... defrosters actually blow cool air on the windshield, no matter how hot you have it set. in order to avoid cracking the glass.
