Today, my surgeon was giving me the lowdown of what was going to happen on the operating table. I was anxious enough without him saying stuff like "cut you open", "quite a bit of blood" and "it's all quite risky." That's all I remember before fainting. My wife won't stop mocking me for it. FML

It's a serious thing no matter what. No one should mock or joke about some one having anesthesia or surgery . You wait until they are sedated to mock them and joke around .

She wouldn't be making fun of you if she was the one having surgery.

The same happened to me except he was explaining a biopsy. Good luck on the surgery if you haven't already had it!

It's just surgeon humor. You would have it if you had to pick in someone's insides all day.

At least your surgeon didn't start watching the "how to" video right in front of you like Dr. Hartman :D Surgery is both risky and scary, but remember that your doctor took an oath and it's their job and goal to keep you as safe and healthy as possible. Try to keep that in mind before your procedure- the less stressed out you are, the healthier your body will be and the better your surgery and recovery will go!

Atleast he was honest! You have to give him that.

I feel your pain OP, I just recently had a major ankle reconstruction procedure and had the same experience. It's like the Drs. And nurses get a kick out of scaring the hell out of us then, bam next thing ya know you wake up in a recovery room thinking how the hell did I get here?!

When I was cut open for surgery at 17 I didn't faint like a wimp. Even after explaining all the ways I could die/get infections/get blood clots/get organs removed if necessary. The only thing I said was don't put a catheter in.

It's because they see it as a normal thing, it's their job.

Hope everything goes smoothly with your surgery, try not to stress too much about it!

Well someone needs to work on his bedside manner.

I had to have an emergency appendectomy. The anesthesiologist asked me how long it had been since I had my thyroid medication regulated and, when I said it had been over a year, he said, "That's too long. You could die on the table." I was in so much pain that I looked at him and said, "Good."
