The grandfather could have offered to pay them. Nowhere does it say that the OP would only help if they were paid. If someone offers to pay you for something and then backs out, that's incredibly rude. And as people have said, hoarders are often not the nicest people. OP might not have a close relationship with their grandfather. Not everyone is super close to their family. A lot of people have family members that are horrible people they don't associate with for their own safety and sanity. People need to get off their high horse with this holier than thou attitude. Being related to someone doesn't mean than you have to endanger yourself for them, especially if they're proven that they shouldn't be around you. You people don't know the whole story. Why are you being so sanctimonious about this?
He didn' pay you so that you would not come back. Hoarders like their junk and often see any attempt to clean it up as a villation.
At least you know now to "Stay off his lawn!"
That is just horrible luck, more so if all that happened while taking a single step! I'm sure a hoarder has an attic you can clean, basement or a couple closets left to make back that lost coin.
Make sure you get your tetanus shot! It is a very nasty nasty thing that can be prevented.
I hope your granddad gets the support he needs. Any subtype of OCD or such behaviours in relation to extreme anxiety are awful to deal with.
I love how everyone automatically thinks OP charged his grandpa money to help out. His grandpa could have offered to pay him. People these days.

Wow. Really people? It's not like the Grandfather was asking for a five or ten minute job- what OP describes would have taken hours, possibly even days, and as the post proves the job is dangerous. Hoarders also tend to have personality disorders that make them not the easiest people to be around, and sometimes outright dangerous and abusive. Also, for all we know, the Grandfather offered the money for the job. It in fact sounds like that was the case, or at least like the grandfather never intended to follow through on paying OP. Which is a really dick move from anyone, but especially family. It's a really common (and abusive/toxic) tactic for people to say they'll pay someone to do a task, set up said task to be impossible, and withhold payment for the job not being done.
Your gramps is a hoarder. I imagine he'd be stingy with money anyway
