Fly my beauties

Today, my first graders released the butterflies we've been raising. The kids were sad that one had died in his cocoon and wouldn't be set free. Turns out that butterfly may have had a better fate: a flock of birds ate half of the others. Immediately after releasing them. In front of the kids. FML

So they learn about life and death...killing two birds with one stone. Or two butterflies with one bird. Take your pick.

#4/5: You are aware that there a lots of different kinds of birds, right? With different diets? There aren't really enough worms in the world to sustain the entire avian population. Plenty of birds are insectivores. And, at least the kids learned about 'the circle of life'? I would have been pretty upset if a bird ate my butterfly though :(

I would have been pretty happy. Terrified of butterflies. Not that that relates to the post at all, but hey, why not share?

hahah. that sucks but think of it as another lesson! the food chain!

#10, you obviously don't know what you are talking about. SOME butterflies are poisonous, you're right about that. take the monarch for instance. it's poisonous. however, there is this thing called "batesian mimicry." a harmless species imitates a harmful species, so the harmless species benefits from predators' learned behavior not to eat butterflies with the harmful coloring. while mimicking species are usually more rare individual-wise, there are a lot of species that mimic. i can think of about 10 species that mimic the monarch... like oh... the viceroy, for instance. considering there are about 20,000 species of butterfly in the world, and many of them are mimics, it is highly unlikely that 95% of the world's butterflies are poisonous.. actually, even "poisonous" species wouldn't be poisonous if they didn't consume poisonous plants as larvae. in short, #10, check your facts before you start bitching. poster - your students definitely learned a big lesson about the food chain.......

Poor kids will remember this for a long time.

... Eep. That is rather depressing... but I suppose it's better they're exposed earlier rather than later.
