By grounded - This FML is from back in 2011 but it's good stuff - United States

Today, I went to dinner to meet my boyfriend's parents for the first time. I received a text message, so I pulled out my phone to check. Apparently, his parents have a "No phones at the table rule" and took my phone away until I could learn "proper table manners." FML

Are they one of those crazy families that sit in dead silence while they eat, too?

Its pretty damn rude to bring out your phone at the dinner table, at least make a point to excuse yourself and look at it in the hall or something

FFS, can't you turn off the freaking phone when you're a dinner guest in someone's home? WTF could be so important? Bad manners suck.

I'm clicking both options. That WAS very rude OP, and you shouldn't have done it, but his parents shouldn't have taken your phone. It's your shit, not theirs.

They shouldn't have taken ur phone but it is kinda rude to txt while you having dinner as a guest at someones house

It was probably a facebook update message anyway... Shutting off the phones during dinner is just common courtesy.

Good to know some people still parent. Tremendously rude of you to do that. They don't have the right to take your phone away, but whatever the text was about could have waited until you were done with dinner.

the table manners in my home consist of, whoever gets to the couch first chooses what to watch on TV for dinner.
