How could you do this to me?

Today, I learned I'm not allergic to gluten. My mom has kept me on a gluten-free diet since I was 5. She was convinced I was allergic to it. I'm 25 and I am writing this over my first slice of pizza in 20 years. FML

There is such a thing as gluten free pizza you know and they are quite tasty. Anyway coeliac disease is genetic so your mum probably assumed.

Coeliac diesease isn't a gentic definate, it's just that if you're parents are you have an increased chance of being so yourself. You're so right about gluten free pizza being nice. I make my own bases and they taste just like normal ones

Is anyone else thinking that as great as this is for OP, they should probably watch out because having gone 20 years without gluten, OP is gonna wanna try everything, and their body isn't used to it so it's gonna be easy to gain weight from this. Just remember moderation is all I'm saying..

You'll still have to be careful for a while. After not eating gluten, it'll take your body some time to get used to all the gluten intake. But after that, go nuts! :D

And once again, I have said the same thing at the same time as someone else... Gaghhh

You should thank your mom, you must be in great shape :)

You have my deepest condolences. A member of my extended family is a filthy hippie and she was told by her "alternative medicine practitioner" that her daughter is allergic to practically everything. Luckily the practitioner sells everything else. I really feel for that poor girl.

congratulations - enjoy your pizza x

I'm not really seeing the fml in this... I mean my mom told my older sister she was allergic to sugar as a child so she wouldn't be able to have it and get hyper like other kids. The only reason she started having sugar in the first place was because my doink of a step-dad slipped and gave her a cookie. Parents do what they think is best for their children (usually). Enjoy that pizza OP.

Come to think of it, it was probably only really bad for you because you knew what you were missing for all those years. If you had started being gluten-free a couple years earlier maybe you wouldn't have missed the pizza so much.

To be fair in your mum, you probably did suffer from coeliac disease when you were 5. Many allergies and intolerances disappear as children mature into adults - equally, many adults develop intolerances they didn't have as a child. For instance I have developed hayfever & lactose intolerance since I turned 20, never suffered from either before then. So give her a break and enjoy your pizza - I can't have any, at least you can now! :)
