Looking for love in Alderaan places

By not4geeks - This FML is from back in 2009 but it's good stuff - United States

Today, I went out on a first date with a cute guy. Turns out we won't be going on a date again because I didn't know the difference between "Star Wars" and "Star Trek." FML

How do you not know the difference? YDI. I'm a girl, and I'd dump you for that. It's proof positive that your interests clash.

Not knowing the difference between Star Wars and Star Trek is like not knowing the difference between a minivan and a truck. You don't have to be a mechanic to know!

I think people are missing the point, it's not that she doesn't know the difference between Star Trek and Star Wars but that someone would be so geek-ish as to dump her for it. What a loser. Really , your lucky.

First of all, everyone seems to be forgetting the "first date" part of this scenario. So in other words, you didn't get dumped-you just didn't get asked out again. Second, anyone who has any sort of connection with pop culture should know this. There is the fact that there have been countless spoofs of either show done on widely popular television (like Family Guy, Saturday Night Live, even stuff like Robot Chicken). YDI for having your head up your butt and not being aware of basic cinematic classics. I suggest you take a film or television history class-apparently you'll learn a lot!

Wow you deserve it. They are COMPLETELY different!!

it's nice that you still think the guy was worth your time even after he proved to be a huge nerd, but if he won't date you again because of that, you deserve better.... maybe and to all of you who are saying the guy's not a nerd... yes he is

Dang that guy was a nerd! Who cares if you can't tell the difference? Geez, at least he gets to go out with a girl...

#119 and #133 have it right...not everyone has to know the difference. If this person hadn't seen the show or had never seen the movies, how would she know? Me, personally, I thought the star wars movies were good, not great but good, and I hate Star Trek.

Most people who grew up in North America should know the difference, if not I wonder what are their interests in life and how good is their general culture. I'm not saying you need to like the show, but even if you never watch Star Wars or Star Trek you should know the difference because it is very popular. It may just be a movie and a TV show, but it's part of general culture. And though it's science fiction, I think people who look at Star Wars with disdain and call it a movie for geeks and kids really lack open-mindedness. I guess I would not go on a date with a girl who doesn't know the difference either, because I would think she may be the immature, close-minded and stupid kind. However, OP might be coming from a foreign country, in which case her ignorance about Star Wars and Star Trek is understandable. My girlfriend had not seen Star Wars until she was 26 for this reason.
