Lost in translation

Today, one of the Haitians that works in the kitchen at my restaurant said something to me. Usually I can't understand them and I just smile and laugh, so that's what I did this time. Later, I found out he was trying to tell me his father had passed away. FML

Bummer. Maybe you should try to understand them better or just be honest and say, "I'm sorry but I just can't understand you; I'm so bad with accents."

i don't care how many times i gotta look stupid repeatedly going "pardon? pardon?" i still gotta know EXACTLY what someone is trying to tell me.

I hate when I'm talking to someone and they don't hear me so instead of asking m what I said again they smile and say yeah

This is soo bad, but I LOLed. You still get a YDI, though.

That last part was a little much but i agree with what he said

He can't just "learn to speak clearly", that's the way he talks.

It's not like he was mumbling...he has an accent.

Not exactly practical in a busy kitchen or restaurant environment. But the op definitely should've cared to at least get the general gist of things.

Maybe you should try talking and listening to them instead of smiling and laughing,,, maybe then they will be able to learn to speak English better.

That brings a whole new meaning to the term 'white devil' lol. But seriously though, I don't see how this could get a YDI, that could happen to anybody who misunderstands a person with a thick accent. Stuff like that happens every day, it's just usually not such an extreme case.

I agree with number six, try to actually talk to them and they will learn how to speak english better because they are technically learning every word you say.
