Today, I was talking to a customer needing IT help. I make small talk about how my birthday is on the same day the Boy Scouts were formed, and I tell the customer I am sure something interesting happened on his birthday. He gets quiet, then gives his birthday. September 11th. Cue the long silence. FML

Today, it was my birthday. Normally, the little office I work in throws a big party for every employee on their special day, but nothing was done for me, not even a "Happy Birthday" came my way. I didn't want to be rude, so I stayed silent. They didn't do anything because I was getting laid off. FML

Today, at a mind-numbingly boring support session, everyone was talking about their hardships. One guy was talking about losing his leg in a car accident. I was half-asleep and asked without thinking, "Did you ever find it?" I almost shat my pants at the roomful of death glares that followed. FML

Today, I went into work and noticed one of my fellow colleagues had a large bunch of flowers on her desk. As soon as I saw her, I immediately said, "Happy Birthday!" Everyone went quiet. It wasn't her birthday; her father had died. FML

Today, it’s my birthday. Not only did my boyfriend of 5 years forget, when I reminded him, he said very unenthusiastically, “Oh, Happy Birthday.” When I said, “That’s it?” he got annoyed and said,“Well, what else do you want me to tell you?” FML

Today, my birthday is in two weeks. I began looking up significant events that occurred on my birthday just to feel as though it actually matters to someone. Few of my friends remember it, and the ones that do have trouble trying to squeeze it into their schedules without screwing up their Christmas plans. FML

Today, I was at a school rally I was talking to my friends when I noticed the entire gym had gotten quiet. Not knowing why I thought it would be funny to yell out "it's too quiet!" apparently it was a moment of silence for a teacher that had recently died. FML

Most of the stuff that happened on my birthday are little things, like Christopher Columbus wrote a letter or this army arrived at this place during this war (but no battles). The coolest thing I found was the exploding meteor in Russia in 2013. Which reminded me that I saw something similar happen a few days later over my hometown.

My mom's husband's birthday is that day. I share my birthday with actor Ian McKellen. And a few family members and friends. Oh and sometimes we celebrate Memorial Day on my birthday.

You were just being friendly and there is nothing wrong with it. If someone asked me the same thing, I wouldn't hold it against them despite the fact that it happened on the same day of the Sewol incident (different year of course!).

My sister's birthday as well. Few years later one of our apartment buildings burned down (9-11-03) and the husband of the woman who took me and my newborn daughter in for the night was celebrating his birthday that day too
