Today, I found out the real reason my dad bought a new car and generously gave me his old one. He knew the engine was about to fail and didn't want it to be his problem when it finally did. It blew out while I was driving at high speed on the motorway. Just my luck. FML

Your dad is a bag of ******, but I think that's insulting ******, I suggest some revenge.

Always get a used car checked by a reputable mechanic. Even if it's from family.

Did you pay for it? I'd feel even more betrayed if you did. But still, even if you didn't, that's a shitty and dangerous thing to do

There's no way he could have known that was going to happen. He probably was trying to do a nice thing only to be accused of having ulterior motives . Only a spoiled child would think their parent would do something like that on purpose. And to go on social media and blast them for it . Don't expect anything else . Glad your not my kid!!

There's not "no way" he could've known. Engines usually don't just blow out of nowhere, there are usually warning signs. Also, don't you think the fact that he just got a new one is a little coincidental as well?

You do know that the dad could have admitted it to OP after the fact, and that's how they know and then posted it here? You have no idea why they are attributing this to their dad. Assuming that the someone is automatically wrong without any evidence to back it up, then blaming them for your assumption. Glad you aren't my dad.

That's a crap move on his part, but you should always take a car in when you get it to get it inspected. Whether you know the person or not, because maybe a tire is close to the end of its life or the brakes are old. So, live and learn. Good you weren't hurt!

Aside from the fact that a blown engine is not a shrapnel factory and you should always check your car before driving it YDI; side note, what person stating they are from California calls the freeway a motorway?

I know a lot of folks are saying that you couldn't have gotten hurt after all, but you really could have! An engine going out when you're at high speed on a highway can end up with you unexpectedly slowing down significantly (for obvious reasons) which if you're in the middle of a lane change or in close proximity traffic can cause an accident. Any unexpected car trouble at highway speed is dangerous. Your dad is not only a dick, but reckless and immature.
