Today, I found out the real reason my dad bought a new car and generously gave me his old one. He knew the engine was about to fail and didn't want it to be his problem when it finally did. It blew out while I was driving at high speed on the motorway. Just my luck. FML

Glad to hear you are ok, that was cruel of him but it could become a project car, get a different motor and rebuild it

Are you okay? Did you stop the without any serious trouble? Your dad owes you a huge apology. Even then I wouldn't be so forgiving. FYL

Well the only real problem is.a car hitting you because you slowed down, an engine blow isn't as serious as it sounds, especially if it's that serious the engine will just lock up. It doesn't mean the engine blew up like a bomb, it means something was timed wrong and the engine got stuck.

THANK GOD. One person knows something.

I've seen engines halt and lock up the whole vehicle, bringing it to a screeching halt and even losing control in the process. There is some serious danger here.

That could be considered attempted murder

I wouldn't go that far, but definitely some serious injuries and guilt would take place.

Ever hear of a tune-up? Or maybe even an oil change? Jeez.

I dont see why there are so many thumbs down. Engines dont spontaneously blow up. It usually requires coolant running out, running the engine dry of oil, etc. I used to own a car that had over 390,000 miles when i got rid of it. Would have kept the car if i could.

If the the car had no oil in it, the check engine light would start flashing, or the oil pressure sensor would be going nuts. If there was no coolant in the car, he would be able to smell it or could easily tell the car was extremely overheated, again a check engine light would start flashing. I highly doubt OP ignored these signs. Maybe there was ticking, or it just ran too rough, but on some older cars it can be hard to tell whether or not these sounds are normal or not. To me it sounds like OP hadn't been driving the car for very long, so he doesn't know how the car should sound or run like. It's not his fault.

are you guys stupid or somethin? lol he's not gonna get hurt if his motor blew..smh

And what about that car or big 14 wheeler behind them that can't break in time...

My dad's like that too kinda. My car, that I bought from him, is his car for the purpose of trying to control where I go, what I do, who I have in it, etc. But when there's something wrong with it, it's my car and my responsibility, and he won't help me. He tells me I "need to figure it out."

Or your dad didn't know about the engine and you're being irrational.

It's kind of hard not to know about those things, because usually a car gives off some sort of warning sign before the engine blows. Also, the fact that he just got a new one is a little too coincidental.

You could have been seriously hurt. Your dad needs his ear chewed off by authority (a.k.a mom maybe)! I can't believe someone would put their kid in danger like that...

Did you not think to have the car looked over when you got it? Even if it is from your dad, a used car is a used car and you should always check for problems.
