Don't listen to people who imply (or say outright) that you're a jerk or whatever. People certainly should protect themselves if they perceive danger; you didn't overreact at all.

I have been mugged at knifepoint once, and i had seen them before it happened and just blew it off as being paranoid. It should give me precedent to being more fearful of others intentions. However, I have had on occasion been extremely paranoid of strangers and have it be nothing of consequence. It's good that you're on alert, but try not to jump to conclusions.... and lay off the caffiene.
